Confession

In Lutheran Liturgy, one of the confessions of sin states, "I , a poor, miserable sinner confess unto You all my sins and iniquities which I have ever offended You and justly deserve Your temporal and eternal punishment." This is an incredibly strong statement. It is in the first person to emphasize that each of us individually are sinful and deserve punishment. It is said as a group to emphasize we are all in this together in the same state. We all have all sinned and fallen short of the the glory of God. (St Paul in Romans.) Furthermore each and everyone of us deserves punishment from God both in this world and the next. Thanks be to God it does not end here. Repentance is a gift and work of the Holy Spirit. There is forgiveness in Christ. We are all sinners in need of forgiveness and we are all beloved Children of God who have the grace of forgiveness waiting for us in Christ. Praise be to God!
